NASCAR's David Ragan - From boy to Superstar by Mr. NASCAR

To quote NEXTEL Cup driver Robert Pressley, a family friend of the Ragan family
"It’s like there’s a blood line down here with the Ragans and racing. They’re good. And whether you’re in Legends, or Busch, or NEXTEL cup, they take everything serious and that’s exactly right. If you take it serious, you’re going to be successful.†David Ragan, son of famed Ken Ragan, was born on December 24, 1985 in Unadilla, Georgia. The 6’s father is a former Winston Cup journeyman so it does not faze NASCAR enthusiasts that the younger Ragan has the same fire for racing as his father. Ragan is currently the director of 600 Racing and was a former NEXTEL Cup driver. During his career, Ken Ragan, made 50 Cup starts from 1982 to 1990. Ken Ragan also made five Busch Series starts in 1982 and 1983.

The younger Ragan started racing when he was 11 years old at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in the Bandoleer Series in 1997. He has been blessed with an extremely fruitful career ever since then. When he was 12 in 1998, he went on to win the National Champion Bandoleer Bandits division under the sponsorship of Rudy’s Farm. At the Atlanta Motor Speedway, he came in 2nd in the Thursday Thunder Series and won 12 Bandoleer features. From ages 13 to 14 (1999-2000), Ragan won the National Champion in the Bandoleer Yu-Guns division, he came in 1st at the Wendy’s Summer Shootout at the Lowes Motor Speedway, managed to grab 19 Bandoleer wins, competed in Legends Cars, won the Young Lions division for the state of Georgia, the Semi-Pro Championship at Atlanta Motor Speedway, purchased Nascar Goods Dash car and won 17 Legend Car features. For someone so young, Ragan achieved a lot in the short span of two years and went on to get more for himself. He gained experience working in Cam Strader’s Goodys Dash shop while on the tracks, he also worked on #6 NASCAR’s Goodys Dash car. On several occasions, he tested the Dash car. Later on, Ragan and Strader’s team worked on two NASCAR Late Models that was used by Ragan in 2002 during his first NASCAR series division. He continued to help Strader in the NASCAR Goodys Dash, Busch and ARCA events and raced ten Legends events at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

By the time he was 18 and eligible for NASCAR divisions, he had driven for Mark Martin, won the â€King of the Oval†thunder Roadster series championship with the national title. Ragan became the youngest driver during Speedweeks in Daytona and he proved his nettle after getting a best finish of 2nd at the subsequent ARCA/Remax series at Kentucky Speedway. He gained a lot of experience when he qualified to compete in eight NASCAR Craftsman Truck events the year he reached the minimum age limit.

Even though he was a terror on the tracks, Ragan’s family made sure he was doing well in school. Ragan was a student at the Eagle’s Landing High School which subsequently led him to a place in the UNC Motorsports Engineering program. He balanced both his professional and student life immaculately. Besides his father, Ragan looks up to Mark Martin on the track. He regards Martin as a mentor who has along the way, given him advice especially when he was preparing for his shot in the Scotts truck.

As Ragan matures and becomes more experienced on the NASCAR tracks, he is building a sound reputation on the tracks and he keeps looking forward to the next race. He has father, Ken Ragan, with him during all his races as Ken Ragan is also his manager. They share a tight bond, one that is cemented with the love of racing.

David By Michelangelo - The History Behind The Statue

Next time you happen to be in the lovely city of Florence, why not spend some time at the Galleria dell' Accademia, and see the statue everyone knows about and talks about. That statue, of course is statue of David by Michelangelo.

Now, it must be pointed out that you're not allowed to photograph the sculptures in the Accademia Gallery on account of “copyright Laws” so the purchasing of postcards and pictures from the gift shops is encouraged. Yet, in Rome, these same “copyright Laws” are not enforced; the only restriction is on the use of flash cameras near the artwork. As a side note, I should point out that Florence receives little funding from Rome or Papi Silvio for the maintenance, not to mention restoration, of the monumental churches and artwork, so paying a few euro for a postcard is a small price for the preservation of these treasures.

The statue of David by Michelangelo did not always grace the floor of the Galleria dell' Accademia; it originally graced an entranceway at the Piazza della Signoria. In 1873 , due to growing safety concerns, the original was replaced by a replica which even though not the original, remains to be an incredible piece of art and truly worth your time to see. There is also no “copyright” limitation because it’s a duplicate so you can take plenty of pictures.

The Checked History Of David By Michelangelo

The famous King David, from the bibles Old Testament, might or might not have been a distant ancestor of Jesus Christ (according to your individual beliefs and interpretations) but his origins and epic journey to ultimate greatness were far from being easy. Much the same is the story and history of the great Michelangelo's Masterpiece, David.

From Modest Beginnings There Came A King

We must remember that David was carved from one solid piece of marble and stands at 5.17 meters or 17 feet in height making the original block of marble huge and very expensive. This massive marble block was cut from a quarry in Tuscany (Carrara), forty year before Michelangelo even receiving the commission or envisioning his masterpiece.

Agostino di Duccio, an assistant to Donatello, was the very first to be given the commission and the block of marble. Much to his credit, Di Duccio did perceive his own statue of David , but his vision of David was never destined to become a reality. After 2 short years di Duccio abandoned the sculpture proclaiming the marble as being simply too challenging and time consuming to work with.

Unveiling David By Michelangelo

The semi-completed sculture, which was one day destined for greatness, sat forgotten and abandoned until 1474. Antonio Rossellino took over from where di Duccio letf off. It seems as though the stone was destined for only one master to complete and after only a couple of months, Rossellino stopped work on the sculpture laying blame on the marble's intractability among other things.

By this time, the once great marble block had been cut and chiseled according to the visions of prior artists. To many, this block was now completely ruined and unusable Destined to be broken up and used as smaller marble pieces.

As they say, "it is always darkest before the dawn" and in 1501 the abandoned piece marble stone was given to a twenty six year old assistant sculptor. This, then 26 yr old assistant, was Michelangelo. Michelangelo could perceive what the stone should be and not what the artist desired it to be. In a broad declaration he confidently declared that he would complete the sculpture without drastically altering it in any way

Michelangelo's David Was Born

Michelangelo worked on the marble for only 3 years before deeming the final completion of what we now consider to be one of the world’s greatest scupltures.. From it's staggered beginnings, the statue of David by Michelangelo was born. Contempories of the time were so impressed that they gave David a place of honor at the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio.

For close to 350 years, David proudly stood in that place of honor amid other great statues on full display to the public and at the mercy of the elements. In 1873 the statue was moved to the Accademia Gallery .
